Who We Are

Flying boy reaches for the starsWestchester Library System (WLS) advocates for excellent service at the 38 member public libraries [1] in 44 locations that make up the county's library system. We are one of New York State's 23 public library systems, which were established in 1958 by State Education Law.

WLS helps members save funds through economies of scale and by sharing resources and services. Through diverse outreach programs, WLS helps local service organizations and residents from all walks of life make the most of their public library. Our services reach everyone including immigrants, bilingual speakers, children, parents, teens, low-literacy readers, career-minded adults, inmates and ex-offenders.

See What We Do [2] for a complete overview of our services.

Over 500,000 library cardholders access WLS's extensive collection of 3.87 million items, including books, audio recordings and CDs, video cassettes, DVDs, print serials, maps, pamphlets and more.

WLS is governed by a 15-member Board of Trustees [3] elected by the trustees of member libraries. We are funded primarily by New York State and by fees from the 38 member libraries. Additional support comes from Westchester County and state and federal grants.
