Memo Number 27
REVISED CALL NUMBER FORMAT FOR PERIODICALS
It was brought to our attention that the date is not being displayed in the status screen or the overdue notice if call number is too long. Accordingly, the recommended call number format for periodical titles in WLS Cataloging Memo Number 24, item 2) has been revised as below:
2) When linking to the proper bibliographic record, be sure to use only dates as a call number to identify each item. This is crucial for patrons who wish to find particular issues. If all member libraries use a consistent format, the call number will be searchable within the holdings record. The recommended sample call number format appears below:
For weekly & semimonthly: 11/05/99; 01/15/00
For monthly: 11/99; 01/00
*For bimonthly: Nov/Dec/99; Jan/Feb/00
For quarterly: Summer/99; Spring/00; Fall/Winter/99
The slash (/) and the hyphen (-) are interchangeable in searching.Be sure to enter the collection code as MAG (Magazine) or JMAG (Juvenile magazine). Call numbers for juvenile magazines will be the same as for adult magazines: just the dates.
*For bimonthly the recommendation is to enter the initial three letters of the month instead of numerals.
